Sustainability, ESG and CSR: vision and management at Bergner

Surely lately you've heard about sustainability, ESG or CSR… not only in the news, but also in our day to day in Bergner. Do you really know what these concepts mean and what is the role of the Department of Communication and Sustainability in all this? To explain it in a simple and close way, we talked to Elena Mascitti, Sustainability Manager, and Paloma Lahuerta, Communication in Sustainability Manager, within the department led by Izar Villegas. Because this is not just about the environment: it is about how, together, we are building the future of Bergner. And you are also part of that journey.

What is the main mission of the Sustainability Department and why is it key for the company’s present and future?

The regulatory, economic and consumer preference shifts have been so profound that our goal is not only for Bergner to keep up but to go one step further and stand out. We see a great strategic potential in this approach, which enhances our impact through business and social collaborations. That’s why our work includes joining international best practices (like the UN Global Compact), calculating carbon emissions, engaging with industry associations, implementing ESG communication regulations, and managing Bergner Foundation and CSR initiatives.

How does the Sustainability Department collaborate with other areas of the company, and what is expected from each team?

Sustainability cannot exist in isolation. It must be embedded in all activities and countries where Bergner operates. It’s key that each team integrates sustainable practices and informs us of challenges or milestones with environmental or social implications. That way, we can jointly assess the corporate impact and act based on reliable data.

What kind of data does the department need to collect, and how is it used?

We collect both quantitative and qualitative data—like percentages of sustainable materials or implemented initiatives. Many are now regulated, requiring high quality and accuracy. This effort also represents an opportunity to strengthen our processes and databases and build trust with clients and stakeholders.

What key indicators have you started reviewing in your first weeks?

Given Bergner’s profile, key sustainability indicators are linked to product development, logistics, CSR and external communication. Meetings with various departments have been crucial to understand how these topics are evolving within the company.

Which aspects of Bergner’s sustainability approach have the most potential?

Sustainable sourcing stands out as highly promising. Since Bergner is both a client and a provider, managing our suppliers based on environmental, social and ethical criteria can ensure responsible practices throughout the value chain.

What has most inspired you about how Bergner works on sustainability?

The strong will to do things right, even in uncertain or complex regulatory and market conditions, has been truly inspiring. Many current initiatives are still voluntary but strategically aligned with industry priorities.

Can you share a concrete action or fact that reflects how sustainability is applied daily?

The sustainability report follows international standards and anticipates future legal requirements. We’re also systematizing ESG data collection and many departments are implementing actions like using more sustainable materials or monitoring supplier practices.
